Bodleian Children's Library, NEW Imprint

*Bodleian Children’s Books* + Book Giveaway!

It’s always great to hear a new children’s imprint is being launched, and better still when it’s one with access to Britain’s largest collection of children’s literature – the Opie Collection of Children’s Literature at Oxford University’s Bodleian Library has over 12 million items. Gosh.

Bodleian Children’s Books will focus on mining the collections to discover and republish timeless and beautifully illustrated children’s books; forgotten gems that can be reintroduced to a new audience. It will also include newly commissioned books, with a connection to libraries, reading and books.’

The first two titles will be published on 18th September – Penguin’s Way and Whale’s Way, each written by Johanna Johnston and illustrated by Caldecott Prize winner Leonard Weisgard.

Bodleian Book Covers

Initially published in 1962 and 1965, they are a delightful introduction to the natural world of the emperor penguin and humpback whale, told in narrative form with vintage illustrations.

These books are beautiful. A great tone, and easy to read. Also perfect as an alternative bedtime story.  The illustrations are a delight. The skill involved in making the limited colour palette and the texture filled illustrations is mind-boggling. Absolutely beautiful…

Following on from these two titles, two more will be published in Spring of 2016 – Veronica, by Roger Duvoisin (which I can’t wait to get my hands on!), and a classic, The Story of Barbar, by Jean de Brunhoff…

Big thanks to the Bodleian Library for sending me these lovely books.  And here’s the best bit – YOU CAN WIN THEM!

The Mudwaffler is very pleased to hold the nest’s first *BOOK GIVEAWAY*! For your chance to win a copy of either Penguin’s Way or Whale’s Way, leave a comment below…

AND for a second chance to enter, see the Twitter and Facebook posts. The winners will be chosen at random on 2nd September 2015. Good luck!

Swamp Hugs! Till the next time…

  1. You are absolutely right – these illustrations are so beautiful. They have so much texture and I love the shade of green used in Whale’s Way.

    1. Very cheering indeed! There must be thousands of wonderful books hidden away, waiting for their time to come again. Hopefully Bodleian will bring us lots of greats for years to come.
